Indigenous Peoples, activists call to dismiss trumped-up charges vs Lumad rights advocate

June 17, 2025

Indigenous Peoples and activists gathered in front of the Quezon City Hall of Justice on Tuesday to call for the dismissal of trumped-up charges against Lumad rights advocate Niezel Velasco.

Velasco and Manobo woman Julieta Gomez were imprisoned for nearly four years on fabricated charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives. On April 8, 2025, the charges were dismissed, and both were acquitted. However, Velasco still faces separate charges of estafa and unjust vexation in courts in Quezon City and Antipolo, respectively.

Claver also added that the state, particularly through its attack dogs such as the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), continues to suppress the rights of those who advocate for and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. She highlighted that these institutions should be held accountable, with the call to abolish the NTF-ELCAC.
