Katribu on the abduction, torture of Mangyan-Iraya Woman in Abra de Ilog, Occ Mindoro
December 12, 2025
Katribu Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas vehemently condemns the abduction and torture of Mangyan-Iraya woman Dolores Mariano Solangon of Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, on December 2, 2025. According to her account, she was tied to a tree and even forced to dig her own grave by soldiers of the 76th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army. This horrific attack came days after an alleged encounter between the New People’s Army (NPA) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the area.
These abuses mirror earlier violations against Ayta Japer Gurung and Junior Ramos, the first to be charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020. They were fleeing intense militarization and aerial bombardment when they encountered soldiers; they were tortured and forced to eat human waste while being coerced into admitting they were NPA members. Dumagat political prisoners Abelardo “Dandoy” Avellaneda and Rocky Torres endured similar torture inside a military camp before being forced to confess to NPA membership. Arrested in 2018, they remain unjustly detained in Camp Bagong Diwa.
These acts constitute grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. Katribu demands justice for Solangon and all other victims of state violence, and calls for the immediate release of Rocky and Dandoy, along with all other Indigenous Peoples political prisoners. We hold the AFP and the Marcos Jr. administration fully accountable, and insist that all those responsible be prosecuted and brought to justice without delay. Beyond punishing perpetrators, Katribu stresses that true justice and lasting peace require addressing the root causes of armed conflict: including land dispossession, militarization, and the systemic oppression of Indigenous Peoples.
