Katribu stands in solidarity with our Bangsamoro kin as they observe the holy month of Ramadan. This sacred period reminds us of the enduring strength of a people who, despite centuries of colonial aggression, state violence, and systematic marginalization, have preserved their faith, identity, and collective struggle for self-determination.
Ramadan is a time of reflection, discipline, compassion, and spiritual renewal. It is not only a season of faith and devotion, but also a powerful affirmation of the Bangsamoro people’s steadfast resistance against oppression and injustice.
The historical marginalization of the Bangsamoro is rooted in centuries of colonial conquest and continuing state violence against communities that refuse to surrender their land, faith, and freedom. Indigenous Peoples and the Bangsamoro share parallel histories of land dispossession, militarization, displacement, discrimination, and exclusion. These injustices stem from the same oppressive and exploitative systems designed to seize control of our ancestral lands and territories while denying national minorities their right to self-determination.
As we enter this holy month, we also remember the martyrs of the Bud Dajo Massacre of March 6, 1906, and the Jabidah Massacre of March 18, 1968, two grave acts of violence committed against the Bangsamoro people. At Bud Dajo, Moro civilians were massacred for resisting colonial occupation. In Jabidah, Moro youth were betrayed and killed by the very state that had recruited them. These tragedies remain stark reminders of the long history of injustice faced by the Bangsamoro people.
The struggle of the Bangsamoro is inseparable from the struggle of Indigenous Peoples across the archipelago. Our fight is one: to defend our ancestral lands, uphold our right to self-determination, and free our communities from exploitation and oppression. May the memory of our martyrs guide us forward, strengthening our resolve and affirming that our struggle is both just and necessary.
